University Fire Marshal **Dean of Research, Stanford, California, United States** **New** Health and Safety Post Date 8 hours ago Requisition # 107101 The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University, as part of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDoR), supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. Our mission is to provide and coordinate programs and services that minimize safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks in a manner consistent with fiscal and environmental stewardship. We are composed of 6 technical groups with more than 100 specialists and technicians who work in the field with top researchers, faculty, staff, and students to support the mission and research of Stanford University. The work environment is team-oriented, collaborative, deadline-driven, and dynamic. EH&S is seeking an experienced health and safety leader to serve as the University Fire Marshal and Assistant Director (AD) of the Fire Safety Programs. Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost, you will provide oversight to our program's services through the development and implementation of institutional fire and life safety programs to protect life and property from the destruction of fires and related incidents. Programmatic responsibilities include public education related to fire safety, plans review and consultation for construction and other building projects, fire safety inspections, fire investigations, and liaison with local agencies responsible for code enforcement and fire-related emergency response. This position also oversees the Fire Protection Systems group responsible for maintenance and testing of fire protection systems, including fire alarms, fire sprinklers, and fire extinguishers. To achieve the successful delivery of fire and life safety, close coordination with affiliated units within EH&S including the Office of Research Safety, Emergency Management, Occupational Safety and Health, and the Environmental Protection Program is essential. The Stanford University Fire Marshal's Office (SUFMO) is part of EH&S and provides comprehensive services to the Stanford community encompassing all aspects of Fire Safety. All SUFMO staff are dedicated to supporting the academic, research, clinical and public service missions of the University. By providing engineering, education, maintenance, and inspection services, we allow the Stanford community to pursue their goals in a safe environment. In addition to providing routine EH&S program management services, staff are to provide support as needed during University emergencies. All EH&S staff must comply with governmental regulations, and University and departmental policies and procedures regarding health and safety and must observe and support good health and safety practices. **In this role, you will** **:** + Define the overall activities of environmental, health, and safety functions, and allocate appropriate staffing and other resources to achieve objectives including development and direction of related policy. + Alert senior management of legislative agendas and ramifications; develop appropriate strategy to address situation. + Provide leadership direction to management and professional personnel in the environmental, health, and safety functions and oversee subordinate managers with large program responsibility. + Maintain and control the financial budget related to units or departments. + Design, develop, and oversee implementation of the most complex environmental, health, and safety protection programs. + Conduct business and technical briefings for senior and top management while serving as an EHS specialization authority in one or more areas: representing and advocating for the university's position in an assigned area and/or specialty: working to develop a consensus position within a diverse, sometimes conflicting stakeholder climate (e.g., operational activities, external regulatory requirements). + May represent the university as the designated senior safety officer of an organization or specialization when mandated by regulatory requirements. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS** **:** **Education & Experience** : Bachelor's degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and seven years of related progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree and/or certification(s) may be required for some programs. To be successful in this position, you need to bring: + Ability to manage large environmental, health, and safety organizations, or a large professional service organization. + Ability to function as a senior manager, with responsibility for developing and mentoring managers and senior professionals. + Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations. + Ability to interpret and apply regulations. + Ability to conduct environmental, health, and safety related risk assessment, mitigation, and crisis management. + Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization. + Ability to lead professionally in emergency/crisis situations. **Certifications and Licenses Required** + Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License. **PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS** ***:** + Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks. + Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand. + Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more. + Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license. + Ability to drive day or night. * _Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees with disabilities.
