Job Title: Toxicology Associate Scientist
Location: Newark DE USA 19711
Weekly Schedule: 8-hours per day 5-days a week; one weekend monthly
Shift: 06:00am - 2:30pm
Duration: 12+ Months Contract
Payrate: $26.50/hr. on W2 (all inclusive)
Job Summary
2-5 yrs experience: Laboratory w/ rodent animal handling, basic science skills; BS Degree required
• Any exposure to common allergens? Yes, animal dander and possibly latex
Notes:
• Rodent toxicology studies
• Administer test substances to rats & mice. Collect weight and blood samples.
• Previous animal handling experience required. Will not hire with ZERO animal experience.
• Can be through previous jobs or schooling.
• Vet Tech experience okay.
• Interview: Virtual/Video - 1 hour. 1 round.
• GLP lab and previous experience preferred.
Job Responsibility
• Ensure the welfare of laboratory rodents in the testing facility.
• Uphold study integrity.
• Careful handling/restraint of laboratory rodents.
• Test material administration by various routes of exposure, e.g. dietary, oral gavage, intraperitoneal injection, subcutaneous injection.
• Determining and recording animal body weights, clinical observations, holding for eye exams, and other in-life study functions.
• Collecting biological samples which can include, urine, feces, and blood (tail venipuncture).
• Data collection using manual and electronic methods (including Provantis and Microsoft software systems).
• Collecting, recording, documenting, and reporting results with a high degree of accuracy and precision in a timely manner.
• Understanding and following all relevant SOPs, GLPs, and safety guidelines.
• Learning and refining new laboratory skills as applicable.
• Maintaining study records and data in in a well-organized manner.
• Communicating effectively with Study Directors, Supervisors, attending Veterinarians, and other relevant staff members within the company.
• Assisting other Associates and completing other tasks as assigned.
• Working weekends, holidays, and or external hours on a rotating schedule.
Job Requirements
• B.S. degree in animal science, biology, or related field or an equivalent of a combination of applicable work experience and higher education.
• 2-5 Years of relevant experience.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team setting with minimal supervision.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office software programs.
Physical Demands
• Employees must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold heavy objects up to 50 pounds. This includes work materials, equipment, animal cage racking systems, and/or transporting equipment on wheels.
• Must be able to perform procedures which require talking, hearing, standing, or sitting for long periods of time, entering data into a computer database(s), using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing personal safety equipment (PPE) according to and/or OSHA standards.
• Must be able to frequently hold rodent species firmly while utilizing fine motor skills.
Work Environment
• Most of the tasks required for this position will be conducting in a secured and locked animal vivarium. When entering the vivarium individuals must wear safety glasses with side shields, laboratory coats or scrubs, and shoe coverings. The use of a respirator (usually a particulate filtering mask) is required in areas/rooms where research animals are being housed or handled. Please note: If the employee had visited another animal facility on the same day as work, has had contact with companion-/pet-/wild-rodents, or had contact with snakes/reptiles/birds of prey that are fed rodents, the employee must shower and have a complete change of clothing prior to entering animal vivarium.
• Employees will be working individually and/or in groups in small animal housing rooms, examination rooms, or special purpose procedures rooms.
• Work in a research environment, which requires the use of sharp objects (e.g. needles) and working around mechanical parts such as rodent caging systems, watering systems, cage washing systems.
• Working with or near known or unknown toxic chemicals and/or biological hazards.
• The employee will work regularly with live animals requiring the use of appropriate PPE to prevent exposure to allergens, biohazards, and/or test material hazards.
